CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE (Mosaic Entertainment, 2003)
Head Count:
Tag-line: 'The First One Had Rules'. Death Toll: At least eleven. Interestingly, some people die twice... Cutting Remarks: The first 'Cube' was an excellent blend of sci-fi and horror, seeing various people waking up in a series of the titular objects, oblivious as to how they got there. The sequel starts with exactly the same premise, although this time the complex which contains them is even more confusing than the one before it. We soon discover that, whereas the first cube had a mere three dimensions, this one plays around with the fourth dimension: time. Once again, the characters are a strong mix and very well played for the most part. Sadly, Lindsay Connell (Julia, the lady in the red dress) doesn't quite inhabit the same league as the other actors. Given the grim nature of the characters' situation - and this movie once again doesn't pull its punches when it comes to killing them off - there's a fair amount of humour. Without giving too much away, the ending is strong but simultaneously predictable, revealing as it does the people behind the Cubes. While it's good that the filmmakers decided to finally give most of the game away, the reality seems to be little more than you had expected all along. Gore fans will also be slightly disappointed - despite several moments of nastiness, '...Hypercube' doesn't attempt to outdo the original in terms of blood-letting. None of which makes 'Cube 2: Hypercube' any less essential viewing for fans of hard-edged sci-fi. Most Memorable Demise: The character who meets a nasty end in The Razorsphere, a deadly flesh-mangling piece of geometry. Look Out For: In the credits, the 2nd Assistant Director, September Death. Best name ever... Killer Quote: "Let's get some ice cream, and everyone will feel much better" - mad old Mrs Paley makes a nice suggestion. DVD Details: Director's commentary, special effects featurette, trailer and deleted scenes. Not a bad little cluster. Release Date: April 21, 2003 (UK retail).
