Horror Possum: she speaks her mind, in very few words indeed
HORROR POSSUM'S VERDICT
"Annoying characters."
DETOUR (2003) aka Cannibal Detour: Hell's Highway (UK) and Hell's Highway (Europe)

Director: Steve Taylor.

Hacktors: Aaron Buer, Ashley Elizabeth, Jill Jacobs.

Rating: Rating: three-and-a-half out of five

The lowdown: Seven ravers dudes and dudettes head out of LA in a mobile home, looking for crazy drug action around a deserted mine. Problem being, said mine is home to a whole bunch of cannibalistic crazies.

Good points: Detour is surprisingly good, with a professional and distinctively colourful look. Very much a homage to The Hills Have Eyes, it doesn't skimp on the gore and violence, giving us the splattery fun that we crave. There are even a couple of surprising moments, and the fact that there are multiple maniacs helps to make this one stand at least a head above some of its peers. The characters are a little better defined than usual, too - they're stereotypes, sure, but at least you can tell them apart. They're practically colour-coded by their dress sense!

Bad points: Aaron Buer's white-boy-rapper Loopz is annoying from the very start, and irritates throughout, although you do start to warm to him by the end. The humour is a little hit-and-miss, too, and the low budget shows in places.

Overall: A nice little surprise. As straight-to-DVD productions go, this one comes recommended.

DVD Extras: None on my European disc. Let me know, folks, if any other formats have special features.

Release Date: Out now.
