[IMAGE: 'Dog Soldiers', UK video sleeve] DOG SOLDIERS (Fox Pathe Home Entertainment, VHS)

Head Count: Rating: four-and-a-half out of five

Tag-line: 'Six men. Full moon. No chance'.

Death Toll: Ten people. And a load of werewolves.

Cutting Remarks: Okay, so this one doesn't feature a masked man wielding various sharp objects, but it's very much a stalk 'n' slash movie. It's just that the stalkers and slashers are werewolves. 'Dog Soldiers' is not just the best British horror movie to emerge in way too long, but the best werewolf flick in a similar period.
While up in remote Scotland on a training mission, an Army team stumble upon the remains of a Special Forces team, torn to shreds. It doesn't take long to guess what's been doing the damage, and our squad are soon holed up in a cottage, running out of ammo with every new, vicious werewolf attack. This scenario naturally had the potential to be delivered really badly, which makes 'Dog Soldiers' all the more impressive. Horror and humour mix surprisingly well, as gore and expletives fly in equal measures. Sean Pertwee (son of 'Doctor Who''s late Jon) deserves special mention for his superb performance as the team's Sarge. Amazingly, considering the bloodshed, this one's received a '15' certificate from the BBFC. Which makes you wonder what a film has to do, in order to get an '18' these days...

Most Memorable Demise: Somebody's head being graphically chewed off and thrown at the windscreen of a Land Rover.

Look Out For: Signs that the production team couldn't afford 'American Werewolf In London'-style transformations - people changing under kitchen tables, for instance. That said, the werewolves themselves look excellent.

Killer Quote: "I'm still not convinced that these things didn't just escape from the local nuthouse and forget to shave or trim their nails" - our hero Cooper soon changes his mind.

DVD Details: Plenty of extras here. No less than three different commentaries, a Making Of, deleted scenes, gag reel and a short film by Marshall (Combat) and more.

Release Date: October 21, 2002.
