D-TOX (Universal VHS/DVD) aka Eye See You
Head Count:
Tag-line: 'Survival is a killer'. Death Toll: Unlucky 13. Certainly unlucky for these folks. Cutting Remarks: Sylvester Stallone seems to have a sneaking penchant for slasher flicks, as his own script for Cobra suggested. He's back in a God's honest one this time, with I Know What You Did Last Summer director Jim Gillespie at the helm. The result is very nearly great. After a series of unpleasant events involving a serial killer who likes to drill people through the eye-hole of their door, Stallone's broken FBI agent Jake Malloy finds solace at the bottom of numerous bottles. He eventually checks into a rehab centre for cops, in the snowy middle of nowhere, where Kris Kristofferson's character is the guvnor. It's not long before people start to die, one by one... The premise is a sound one, and director Gillespie goes about the killing in an admirably vicious manner. It's no bloodbath, but pretty tough for a Universal picture. Stallone puts on a pretty believable performance, too. The movie's potentially thrilling whodunnit aspect, however, is spoilt by (a) the fact that we see, early on, that the killer is white; and (b) the pathetic way in which the killer is revealed. D-Tox remains a decent thriller, whose non-performance at the box office is something of a mystery. Most Memorable Demise: That of the character played by our old friend Terry 'Stepfather' O'Quinn. Nasty. Look Out For: The opening 15 minutes. They don't waste much time getting the story told. Killer Quote: "Confirmation!" - Stallone barking at someone, when they ask why he's looking under a corpse's eye-lids. A rather over-judged moment! DVD Details: Not too bad at all, with 20 minutes of deleted scenes. Release Date: Out now. [Check it out at Amazon US] [Reviews Menu] [Home] © Copyright Slasherama 2002-present |
