EVILSPEAK (1981)
Director: Eric Weston Hacktors: Clint Howard, Joseph Cortese, RG Armstrong.
Cutting Remarks: Evilspeak doesn't appear to be everybody's cup of tea. Some people cite the extremely slow build-up to the bloody climax; others point to the ludicrous nature of the Satanic storyline. For some reason, neither of these factors seems to faze me in the least. I love Evilspeak. Perhaps it's the dark, brooding atmosphere. Or maybe it's the fact that it's as gory as all hell... eventually. Stanley Coopersmith (Howard) is your classic bulbous nerd, eternally bullied by the other boys at a military school. Serves him right for going to military school in the first place, clearly, but nevertheless we feel his pain. Coopersmith's enemies are also about to hurt in a very literal sense: the boy has started buggering about with a hilariously primitive-looking computer in the academy's conveniently-located Satanic basement (complete with candles which seem to light themselves). Making contact with a dead warlord named Esteban, he summons diabolical forces against his tormentors. The first two-thirds of this one are admittedly slow, but as I said, the pay-off justifies the slog. It's supremely satisfying to see Coopersmith finally getting his revenge. In a joyously gory sequence, he floats around the academy, clutching a sword and decapitating anyone within reach. Top notch - and now fully uncut! Look out for those flesh-eating pigs, too. DVD Extras: An alternative version of the film, no less! An audio commentary with cast and crew, trailer, biographies and more. Shame there's no documentary, but what's here is good value. Who'd have thought that this l'il movie would ever receive such fine treatment? Ohhh, it makes me proud, I tells ya. Release Date: Out now.
