[IMAGE: Bill Paxton puts paid to an alleged demon in 'Frailty'] FRAILTY (2002)

Head Count: Head Count: five out of five

Tag-line: 'No soul is safe'

Death Toll: Seven people. Or are they demons?

Cutting Remarks: Actor Bill Paxton couldn't have picked a better directorial debut, and it's pleasing to see such a highly-respected actor taking a risk with such a dark piece of work. This is one head-f**k of a movie, which patiently unravels its story in the style of 'The Usual Suspects', while all the time building up to something surprising, much like 'Seven'.
The story is convoluted, and jumps back and forth in time a fair deal, but is never confusing. Fenton Meegs (Matthew McConaughey) comes to Detective Wes Doyle (Powers Boothe), to tell him that his brother is the God's Hand killer that the police have been looking for. In order to convince him, he reels off the whole story of how their father (Bill Paxton), back in '79, became convinced that they had been chosen by God to rid the world of demons, using 'special weapons'... which turn out to be axes and gloves.
'Frailty' is a delight to watch from start to finish, and the twists in its final third are mind-blowing. The final one is outrageous, as you suddenly realise the big picture. One for the 'Sixth Sense'/'Usual Suspects' school of having to watch it a second time. Despite the high number of axe murders here, there's very little gore on display, but 'Frailty' is perfectly capable of chilling without any of the red stuff.

Most Memorable Demise: Probably one of the main characters getting a surprise axe in the chest. You'll know it when you see it.

Look Out For: The bewildering final five minutes.

Killer Quote: "We're a family of superheroes, who are going to help save the world!" - Paxton lays down his manifesto to sons Fenton and Adam.
