FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING (Paramount Home Entertainment UK)
Head Count:
Tag-line: None on this release. Death Toll: An impressive 20. With an extra one, presuming the final scene isn't a hallucination. Cutting Remarks: Being the Friday The 13th series' only whodunnit is a dubious distinction, and this episode generally vies with '... Jason Takes Manhattan' as the franchise's lowest point, in most people's opinion. Part V isn't a terrible movie, but it's clear that it marks the series momentarily losing direction and focus. Tommy Jarvis, who we last saw slaying Jason Voorhees in Part IV, has now grown up and is understandably a very disturbed individual. He is accordingly packaged off to Pinehurst, a camp for disturbed individuals. And would you believe it - murders start to happen. Is it Jason back from the dead, Tommy or somebody else? Believe us, the identity of the killer is so painfully obvious that you won't have any trouble guessing. This clumsiness aside, the movie does offer up a lot of fairly bloody killings. Furthermore, as the BBFC are more liberal in their attitudes towards straight slasher flicks these days, it now appears to be uncut, restoring a previous minute-and-a-half of censorship. While there's not as much extra gore as you might expect - there rarely is - 'Friday' fans will definitely notice the differences. Whichever way you slice it, '... A New Beginning' was a mistake - particularly as 'Jason' is barely seen during its running time. Yet for the 'Friday' fan, it's a tolerable mistake, with some strong moments. Most Memorable Demise: Eddie getting tied to a tree by a leather strap across his face... which gets very tight indeed. Definitely a little more graphic in this new version than before. Look Out For: A Michael Jackson lookalike who gets impaled in an outside toilet. In this new, uncensored version, he gets a spike through his leg as well as his guts. Killer Quote: "You big dildo. Eat your f**kin' slop!" - Ethel addresses her equally white-trash son, Junior. DVD Details: As with all of Paramount's horror DVDs, this one's pretty bare. Besides various different language tracks, you get the theatrical trailer, which is worth having for Friday nuts. And it's great to see Part V in anamorphic widescreen, with Dolby Digital sound. Release Date: Out now.
