HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION (2002)
Rating:
Tag-line: 'Evil finds its way home' Death Toll: Nine people. All killed, weirdly enough, by one Michael Myers and in surprisingly explicit fashions. Cutting Remarks: The outward signs weren't that great - an uninspired, vague subtitle, the internet theme and the inclusion of rapper Busta Rhymes - and indeed Halloween: Resurrection insults the intelligence on a number of occasions. Once you relax and enjoy it as a stupidly modern slasher flick, however, it's actually turns out to be a lot of fun. Stucturally, Resurrection has the odds stacked against it. Jamie Lee Curtis was clearly only contractually obligated to appear for a very limited time, and once her opening segment is over - including a ludicrous explanation for how Michael survived the end of Halloween: H20 - there's a very obvious void left in Haddonfield. A bunch of kids staying in the Myers house for a night, while being broadcasted on the internet, then, isn't exactly a replacement for a fourth round between Laurie Strode and the Shape. Busta Rhymes is Freddy, the man behind Dangertainment, the company net-casting from the house, and from the beginning he overacts, seemingly 'free-styling' with the dialogue. It's not a pretty sight, but you eventually get used to him. The five kids themselves are fairly standard issue teens - it's the situation that's unusual. While the whole techno angle is corny in the extreme - our heroine Sara communicates with a cyber-friend throughout, via her Palm Pilot - it becomes a lot more fun if you laugh along with it. Plus points? Michael looks good in this one, and rather scary, too. Furthermore, the gore flows more plentifully than in the relatively restrained Halloween: H20. And the climactic fight sequences are well-handled - even with Busta's martial arts buffoonery. Most Memorable Demise: One character being decapitated at the top of the staircase. Her head proceeds to bounce merrily down the stairs. Look Out For: The supremely silly moment when Curtis' Laurie hoists Michael up into the air with a winch. How lucky that he stood in the right spot... Killer Quote: "Trick or treat, motherf**ker!" - Busta takes on the Shape. DVD Extras: Lots of stuff, including an On Set With Jamie Lee Curtis featurette, alternative endings with commentary and plenty of webcam-centric material. Release Date: Out now.
