[IMAGE: 'Hellraiser: Inferno' sleeve] HELLRAISER: INFERNO (Dimension Home Video)

Director: Scott Derrickson.

Hacktors: Craig Sheffer, Doug Bradley, Nicholas Turturro

Head Count: Rating: 2.5 out of five

Tag-line: 'The Terrifying New Chapter In The Hellraiser Legacy!'

Death Toll: A handful, including hookers, kiddie fiddlers and cops.

Cutting Remarks: It was maybe for the Hellraiser series' own good that the fifth part took a totally different direction than the previous four. Hellraiser: Inferno tries, and ultimately fails, to be a good 'mind fuck' film. Still, here we go...
Cops go into a house which has been the scene of a grisly death. Joseph Thorne (Craig Sheffer) is a detective checking out the surroundings of the room where they find a dead body. There he finds a weird candle stick - it has a gold box on the bottom, with an odd pattern. You can guess where this is going, can't you? Joey ends up taking the box and goes straight to a motel room with a rather fine hooker. After snorting coke and having "anything you want, as many times as you want" according to the lady of the night, he goes to sleep. During the night he wakes up, goes to the toilet and sees the box, and starts to play with it. Yes it opens, and he's in a room with twin cenobites. He 'wakes up', but has weird visions and goes to see a shrink. But is he awake? Is he alive? Will he find out what is going on? That's why Hellraiser: Inferno is a mind fuck - you're left scratching your head, come the end of it.
This film was slaughtered by critics upon its release, who said it may as well not been put under the Hellraiser banner, for all the time the Cenobites are in it. And there's not much gore. Many fans have now abandoned the Hellraiser films as a result of this sequel.

Most Memorable Demise: Spoiler coming right up, so stop reading right now if you care! Joesph's death is good only for the fact it makes the whole film make sense, come the end. Well, for some anyway. But then again, theres nothing to show off about in this film, in terms of death scenes.

Look Out For: Pinhead! He's hardly in it.

Killer Quote: "Welcome... to Hell."

DVD Details: 'Secrets of Hellraiser Revealed' featurette and 'A Conversation with Doug Bradley'. Pretty good, considering the movie.

Release Date: October 2000.
