JASON GOES TO HELL (New Line Home Entertainment)
Head Count:
Tag-line: None on this release. The film has previously borne the tag-line 'Evil Has Found A Home'. The movie has also previously had the subtitle 'The Final Friday'. Death Toll: A healthy 21. Twenty-two, if you're silly enough to include Jason Voorhees. Cutting Remarks: Nine years after its release, Jason Goes To Hell finally gets some respect, with a quality release on disc. Here at Slasherama, we'll admit that we're suckers for the old hockey-masked fella, and while this has been a controversial series entry, we love it. Why so? Clearly, Jason himself doesn't get much screen-time in his hockey-masked guise, due to the fact that his infernal soul spends much of the movie possessing one body after another. But seeing as one of our favourite movies is The Thing, you'll find no quarrel with that here. Furthermore, after the relatively gore-free eighth instalment, the splatter that hits the walls in this one is a joy. Especially in the unrated version, which is naturally featured here (the UK DVD is also uncut), along with the 'R'-rated cut. While you might wonder who would choose to watch the censored take, director Adam Marcus and screenwriter Dean Lorey spend a fair portion of their excellent audio commentary marvelling over how it makes the film more scary. Having said that, we've yet to take them up on their word and actually watch it again. While we're on the subject of that audio commentary, we should add that Marcus and Lorey come across as all-round swell guys, still proud of their effort (Marcus' directorial debut) but more than willing to point out the kind of mistakes that only the most hardened Jason fans would have noticed anyway. Particularly amusing are their constant reminder that the film is stuffed with an unfeasible number of "rules". Mock all you like, but Jason Goes To Hell is a scary - yes, scary - and thrillingly visceral expansion of the Friday universe. Even with that ending, which sets the franchise up for Freddy Vs Jason. Most Memorable Demise: Deborah, the not-so-happy camper who gets ripped in half while having sex. In the unrated cut, it's a jaw-dropping doozy. Steady on that pause button, though - part of the magic of this effect is in the speedy editing. Look Out For: Kane Hodder, the actor who plays (or used to play...) Jason Voorhees, as a security guard who gets wasted by the killer himself. Oh, the irony! Killer Quote: "Nhhhhhyyyyaaaa haaaa haaaargh!" - The diabolical laughter of one F. Krueger... DVD Details: Besides that audio commentary, you get some deleted scenes. These are quite mundane, as they were designed to beef up the running time of the TV version, a la Halloween, but are interesting nonetheless. Then there's the theatrical trailer and the rather cool 'Jump To a Death' scene selection feature. It's amazing that a horror DVD hasn't done this before. Or maybe they have - tell us on the Message Board! Tech-heads will love the fact that this comes in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS sound modes. Release Date: Out now!
