Horror Possum
HORROR POSSUM'S VERDICT
"It was really shit"
JUNIOR (2003)

Director: Marc Ickx

Hacktors: Cecilia Bergqvist, Marlene Simons, Bob Dougherty.

Rating: Rating: one out of five

The lowdown: Two European girls, who may or may not be lesbians, drive a rundown Daimler out into the countryside for a well-earned break. Then the Daimler breaks down and Sandra (Simons) heads off to find help, leaving Rebecca (Bergqvist) alone. And doesn't come back. Sounds like a familiar but fun plot, doesn't it?

Good points: Hmmm, let's see. Coming up blank, here. Okay: there's a smattering of fairly strong gore. One disturbing scene sees one victim having their throat slashed by the titular goon's cool-looking sicle, only to be slowly decapitated while they're still alive. Junior himself looks okay, like a Slipknot reject, although for a brain-damaged kid he pulls off some hilarious acrobatics at certain points.

Bad points: Terrible script (characters do far too much talking to themselves, for one thing, and we get a whole heap of pure, unfettered exposition at the end), baaad acting (although Bergqvist does okay with what she has) and worst of all, slack editing. Junior could have done with losing ten minutes, as several scenes drag on for way too long. One midway sequence, in particular, sees Bergvquist trapped in her car, while something unseen rocks it to and fro. She gets out, tries to find help, then gets back in, then the rocking starts again... good God, it's like being in Hell. Similarly, a latter sequence rips off Friday The 13th Part 2's pretending-to-be-the-psycho's-mother idea and stretches off into the realms of eternity.

Overall: An often dull waste of time, Junior isn't even bad enough to be hilarious. Not good-bad: bad-bad.

DVD Extras: Trailers for Junior and other Artisan titles, Dolby 2.0 and 5.1 sound and a photo gallery. Oh, and 'interactive menus'. Don't you love the way DVDs try and pass this off as a special feature?

Release Date: Out now in the States.
