[Check it out at Amazon US] LIVE FEED (2006)

Director: Ryan Nicholson.

Hacktors: Kevan Ohtsji, Taayla Markell, Rob Scattergood.

Rating/5: Rating: three-and-a-half out of five

The lowdown: We're in post-Hostel territory here, as five Americans make the mistake of pissing off an oriental crime boss. Cue much torture and dismemberment, in a porno theatre. Marvellous!

Good points: Live Feed pretty much makes good on the nastiness implied by its premise. The five travellers are certainly made to regret being rude to the sadistic crime boss, as they're cut up, made to eat snakes and have swords rammed through their nipples. Ouch. This in an unapologetic gore movie. As likeable director Ryan Nicholson says in the making-of, "People are gonna say this is just violence for the sake of violence. And they're right!"

Bad points: None of the supposed 'good guys' are particularly likeable, so Nicholson misses a trick as a result of our relative indifference to their fates. The acting veers from passable to abysmally wooden. Also, while the gore effects are big, bold and enthusiastic, sometimes they feel a little stilted in the way they've been shot and edited. No big deal.

DVD Details: The aforementioned making-of, which is a lot of fun. Deleted scenes, alternate scenes and an alternate ending. Trailers, director/cast commentary and Womb Service, the movie shown in the porno theatre.

Overall: A sadistic feast, if your stomach can take it. Hostel remains more disturbing, but Live Feed is more about fun and giving gorehounds what they want. Tuck in!

Release Date: Out now on DVD in the US and UK. Surprisingly, the UK disc is uncut, despite the inclusion of still hardcore-sex imagery and a woman being forced to chomp on a man's severed, uh, manhood...
