[IMAGE: 'My Bloody Valentine', US DVD sleeve] MY BLOODY VALENTINE (Paramount, DVD)

Head Count: Rating: four out of five

Tag-line: None, on this release. Past releases have, however, featured the likes of 'Harry's out to steal your heart'.

Death Toll: Twelve, including someone in a flashback.

Cutting Remarks: Released in 1981, My Bloody Valentine is an archetypal slasher flick of the period - right down to the crazy old doomsayer and the ludicrous whodunnit element. Even in the cut version, which seems destined to be the only one we ever see, it's a satisfyingly nasty piece, with various sharp objects piercing flesh.
The storyline concerns a miner, Harry Warden, who went insane after being trapped in a mine and went on a murderous smalltown rampage before vanishing. As the massacre happened on Valentine's Day, the town hasn't celebrated the occasion in the 20 years since. Until, of course, this year. Bad move. But is the killer really Harry Warden?
Meanwhile, a love triangle is raging between three teens - TJ, Axel and Sarah. The various flimsy plot strands all lead down into a mine, which is a great claustrophobic slasher scenario. The ending - especially in this cut version, when the killer suddenly loses an arm - is utterly insane. Which is clearly a good thing.

Most Memorable Demise: That of Sylvia, who gets her head impaled on a pipe, so that water shoots out of her mouth.

Look Out For: The film's very own hilarious theme song, which plays out over the credits.

Killer Quote: "I'm tellin' you now - this town is accursed!" - Hap, the classic doomsaying barman.

DVD Details: Picture and sound quality aside, this is an atrocious excuse for a DVD. The best it can offer is Scene Selection. Not even a trailer...

Release Date: Out now.
