ROADKILL aka Joy Ride (20th Century Fox)
Rating:
Tag-line: 'Never screw with people you don't know' Death Toll: A mere two. Plus a man in a coma, minus his jaw. Cutting Remarks: Roadkill is not a slasher movie in the standard sense of the term, but certainly fits the post-Scream teens-in-peril paradigm. In style, it recalls The Hitcher (mysterious lone character makes kids' life hell) meets Steven Spielberg's Duel (people being chased by a huge truck). Unluckily, it's also quite similar to the previous Jeepers Creepers, which served up a far more hardcore horror offering. That's not to say that Roadkill isn't a lot of fun, and it definitely scores highly in the suspense stakes. In the movie's first half, Lewis and his older jail-prone brother Fuller play a joke on a trucker via CB radio. Needless to say, this goes badly wrong and follows them into the movie's second half, with increasingly nightmarish results. Lewis' love interest Venna naturally ends up being dragged into the maelstrom. While you get the feeling early on that Roadkill won't have the courage of its convictions and deliver something really slam-bang nasty - and you'd be right - its rollercoaster ride is one worth taking. There are many memorable scenes, such as the truck scything through a corn-field, or indeed through an entire motel. Recommended for those who don't mind their horror with a safety net. Most Memorable Demise: We don't see either, so it's difficult to say... Look Out For: Great tension as one character faces a shotgun, which is hooked up to a door handle. Killer Quote: "Candycan? Anyone out there know Candycan?" - our creepy killer scours the CB airwaves. UK Release Date: Out now. DVD Details: Loadsa stuff. No less than three audio commentaries (betcha don't listen to more than one. A 29-minute alternate ending (has to be a record breaker), deleted scenes and plenty more.
