[Check it out at Amazon.co.uk] R.S.V.P. (MIA)

Director: Mark Anthony Galluzzo

Hacktors: Jason Mewes, Rick Otto, Glenn Quinn

Rating: Rating: three out of five

Tag-line: 'Nicky's Throwing A Party - And Everyone's Dying To Be There'

Death Toll: Twelve.

Cutting Remarks: Very much a cross between the Scream movies and American Psycho, this Las Vegas-set slasher flick doesn't entirely live up to its initial promise. A group of friends gather at a party thrown by chiselled, serial killer-obsessed Nick (Otto). So far, so formulaic. The one interesting twist which R.S.V.P. does manage, is that we learn the murderer's identity about a third of the way through. The hook then becomes to see whether they can get away with their crazy notion of slaughtering all their pals.
The script, and the performances, are often a little too self-consciously hip for their own good, and the first half hour drags it heels somewhat. Jason Mewes livens things up a shade when he arrives at the party, basically reprising his Jay character from Kevin Smith's flicks - and indeed seems to be a dippy pot-head in real life, as the making of featurette on this disc suggests! The mix between horror and black comedy works fairly well, often making the killings seem even more brutal, despite the low-key nature of the gore. There's a skewed view of reality here, and you have to keep reminding yourself how horrendous these events actually would be.
The ending is completely ludicrous, shattering the tone of all that's gone before it, but does at least leave you with a smile on your face. Not entirely successful, R.S.V.P. is nevertheless a watchable addition to teen horror canon.

Most Memorable Demise: A nasty neck snap.

Look Out For: The marvellously cliched scene, when our partygoers bring out some Tarot cards. Hey, gee, someone's drawn the Reaper! Go figure the chances of that happening.

Killer Quote: "Don't think you're gonna make that gig tomorrow" - the killer, after offing a couple of musos.

DVD Details: Not a bad selection of extras at all for a relatively obscure flick - there's a making of featurette, which is pretty much for Jason 'Jay' Mewes fans only. The boy walks around the movie set with a camcorder, babbling like the stoned guy he undoubtedly is. We learn here, incidentally, that R.S.V.P.'s working title was the inferior Sticks And Stones. Then there's deleted scenes, the trailer and some biographies. Sound is 5.1 Dolby, while visuals are in good ol' anamorphic widescreen.

Release Date: Out now.
