[IMAGE: Blue Underground's 'Dead & Buried' sleeve] SCARECROW (Anchor Bay UK)

Director: Emmanuel Itier

Hacktors: Tim Young, Todd Rex, Mark Irvingsen

Rating: Rating: 1.5 out of five

Tag-line: 'You've never been stalked like this before!'

Death Toll: An impressive sixteen.

Cutting Remarks: There's always something inviting about killer scarecrow movies, whether they be the ancient TV thriller Dark Side Of The Scarecrow or the more recent Scarecrows, in which the titular straw-heads went on a very gory rampage. The Scarecrow here has certainly been well-designed: sadly, we can't say the same for much of the movie itself.
The story is painfully unoriginal - a geeky trailer park kid named Lester Dworvick gets bullied at high school, but ends up gaining revenge as... you guessed it. Unfortunately, the scarecrow which he ends up becoming has no personality in common with the Lester character and simply barks terrible one-liners at its victims. This technique reminded me of 1985's amusingly lousy flick Nail Gun Massacre, which is a sad inditement. Also ludicrous is the supposed twist ending, which is so predictable - and bloodless - as to make you want to kick your TV through the wall.
On the brighter side, the movie is upbeat and generally fun, with some good-looking girls and a fair splattering of gore. I just doubt that anyone involved with this corn-fest will want it on their CV in, oh, five years.

Most Memorable Demise: The school teacher who gets a spindle through the back of her head and out through her mouth in an Intruder-esque effect.

Look Out For: Look out for Fangoria man Anthony C Ferrante in the credits. He handled the special effects which are, by and large, none too bad.

Killer Quote: "Who could be scared of that thing? Come on, let's go find a small animal to torture." - two morbid kids, who sadly don't get bumped off.

DVD Details: Fairly scant, but better than nothing. There's a short outtakes reel of less-than-hilarious moments, trailers, on-screen film notes. And the film's in 5.1 Dolby, which is nice for a picture on this level.

Release Date: Out now.
