SESSION 9 (Universal Home Video)
Rating:
Tag-line: 'Fear Is A Place'. Death Toll: Five people. Cutting Remarks: While I often find your average psychological horror movie a little too high-falutin', this one's fantastic. More than a little reminiscent of The Shining, Session 9 frankly made me afraid to sleep in the dark... for 30 minutes afterwards, at least. The excellent Scottish actor Peter Mullan stars with veteran thesp David Caruso, leading a team of asbestos cleaners in tackling a long-closed asylum. The only problem is, Mullan's character Gordon seems to be headed for a nervous breakdown, which may well be connected with the asylum's past and, more specifically, the spirits which live on within it. Session 9 is one of those movies which you need to see before someone else tells you too much about it. Suffice to say, the playback of interview tapes with a girl with multiple personalities (and voices) is scarier than almost anything in The Exorcist, and the climax will leave you shaken. Ultimately, Session 9 succeeds in portraying a fate far worse than death, and for that alone it should be seen. Most Memorable Demise: In a genuinely horribly scene, one character has a spike rammed into his eyeball. Look Out For: A brilliantly staged scene in which darkness races along a corridor to engulf one of the workers. Killer Quote: "What are you doing here?" - Repeated several times by the character Hank... DVD Details: An excellent job has been done here, considering that this is hardly a high-profile release. Besides a joint audio commentary by the writer and the director, there's further optional chat over a selection of deleted scenes. Besides showing us an alternate ending, the pair reveal an entire sub-plot which was excised for reasons of 'streamlining'. Release Date: Out now. Editor's note: Brad Anderson went on to direct the similarly brilliant chiller, The Machinist. [Check it out at Amazon UK] [Reviews Menu] [Home] © Copyright Slasherama 2002-present |
