THE BURNING (Vipco)
Rating:
Tag-line: 'The most frightening of all maniac films!' Death Toll: Spoiler alert, if you're easily spoiled... ten. Including Cropsy the toasted killer. Cutting Remarks: Finally, this classic slasher flick can be seen uncut in the UK! While The Burning is easy to criticise for its leisurely pace, there's something about it that sums up the feel of the '80s slasher. It's also a nasty piece which has existed in various states of censorship around the world. The story is textbook slasher: kids at Camp Blackfoot accidentally torch Cropsy the caretaker and he seeks revenge on kids at Camp Stonewater. Among our usual array of stereotypes we have Alfred the voyeuristic pervert and Glazer the bully-jock. While the script hardly shines, the characters are slightly more defined than you'd expect. Of course, bloody deaths are this movie's raison d'etre and make-up man Tom Savini delivers in spades. The truly gobsmacking - and unique - element of The Burning, however, is rarely mentioned. The raft/canoe massacre scene has incredible impact: five kids are slain in the space of 36 seconds. The climactic battle, too, has a nicely grim atmosphere and Cropsy's death is satisfyingly brutal. A Slasherama winner! Most Memorable Demise: Any of the five on that raft. Look Out For: A blink-and-you'll-miss-it role as Camp kid Sophie by Holly Hunter in her first film appearance. Killer Quote: "This guy is burnt so bad, he's cooked. A fuckin' Big Mac... overdone. You know what I mean?" - the hospital orderly drastically labours the point. DVD Details: This is a bare bones job, but hey - at least it's uncut. Release Date: Out now. [Reviews Menu] [Home] © Copyright Slasherama 2002-present |
