THE INCUBUS (Elite Entertainment DVD, 2003)

Director: John Hough.

Hacktors: John Cassavetes, John Ireland, Helen Hughes.

Rating: Rating: four out of five

Tag-lines: 'The ultimate power of evil', 'He is the destroyer', 'The Dreams. The Nightmares. The Desires. The Fears. The Mystery. The Revelation. The Warning'.

Death Toll: Eight people.

Cutting Remarks: This 1981 movie is certainly one of the better acted horror flicks to come out of the '80s, and this is mostly down to Cassavetes, a man with a permanent smirk on his face. It's a miracle that the cast approach the storyline with such deadly seriousness, seeing it's basically about a demon which is going around molesting and killing inhabitants of a small town.
Cassavetes' dry performance and Hough's direction somehow manages to make the whole thing not only quite believable but also frightening and impactful. There are some great moments, along with a few which approach the 'dull' zone, but this is fundamentally a pretty convincing piece of work.
The clincher is the ending, which happens so fast you have to rewind and take it all in. Call us naive, but we certainly weren't expecting it. An unexpected doozy, and no mistake.

Most Memorable Demise: The fella who gets a spade in the neck, then accidentally blows his own foot off! Tut tut, clumsy.

Look Out For: Quite remarkably, soon-to-be Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson appearing with his band Samson. Playing a terrible song.

Killer Quote: "I just called to say I love you" - Cassavetes' character Sam becomes Stevie Wonder.

DVD Details: It's great to see a good-looking print of The Incubus after seeing the murky old UK version on the otherwise wonderful VTC label. The only extra on this disc, however, is a trailer. But the menus look nice.

Release Date: Out now on Region 1.
