[Check it out at Amazon.co.uk] TRAUMA (2005)

Director: Marc Evans.

Hacktors: Colin Firth, Mena Suvari.

Rating: Rating: three out of five

Cutting Remarks: As longtime Slasherama surfers will know, director Evans' My Little Eye is one of my favourite films. Naturally, I was looking forward to checking this one out, even if Colin Firth's casting suggested that it wouldn't be nearly as nasty as its predecessor. While in many ways this very psychological thriller has turned out to be a disappointment, Evans' direction and Firth's committed performance ensure that it's never less than watchable and enjoyable.
Firth's character wakes up from a coma, grieving over his girlfriend who he remembers was also in the car. From here on in, he gradually falls apart. But is it grief - or denial? The story gradually unfolds and does succeed in disorientating you, because we're seeing everything from Firth's point of view. Was he responsible for the murder of a female pop star, which coincided with his car crash? Even he starts to doubt his own innocence...
Don't know about you, but I'm getting tired of films about people having mental breakdowns and losing their grip on what's real and what's not. For this reason, plus the ending being unclear and Mena Suvari being ever so slightly irritating (she's well out of her acting depth here), Trauma never quite wows you. It's mildly disturbing while you're watching it, but is ultimately quite forgettable. Apart from the scene with the spider. Oh, and a nasty audio-based jump involving broken glass.

DVD Extras: Plenty of making-of action, with most of the cast pontificating about what the movie's all about.

Release Date: February 21, 2005 (UK).
