Wrong Turn's movie poster
WRONG TURN (2003)

Director: Rob Schmidt

Hacktors: Eliza Dushku, Desmond Harrington, Jeremy Sisto, Emanuelle Chriqui

Rating: Rating: four out of five

Tag-line: 'It's The Last One You'll Ever Make'

Death Toll: Nine. Until Wrong Turn 2 arrives, that is...

Cutting Remarks: There are few things we like better here at Slasherama Towers than a good ol' backwoods slasher flick. Christ, we wrote our own interactive e-story along very much the same lines as this zippy little thriller. The plot-line was no doubt scribbled on the back of a beer mat one lunchtime - kids go to the woods and meet scary, murderous people. But it's great to know that some film-makers aren't afraid to take an idea which most people would consider done to death, and go full steam ahead with it.
The good news for horror fans is that Wrong Turn doesn't pull its punches. While it might not be a no-holds-barred gore-fest, neither does it offer the sanitised kills of the post-Scream era. Basically, director Rob Schmidt knows what fans of these movies want to see, and for the most part gives it to them as the deformed, inbred trio go about their grisly work. Everything zooms along at quite a pace, which is one of Wrong Turn's decided strengths. Characters are sketched quickly, but you still care about them to a certain extent. There are no extended sequences of philosophical contemplation. No fat. That's (generally) the kind of movie we like.
The climactic battle suffers from slightly over-zealous editing, as it's hard to see who's doing what to whom amid the mayhem. Taken as a whole entity, however, Wrong Turn is a welcomely non-ironic piece of fun and a worthy addition to the list of movies already featuring Deliverance, Southern Comfort and the greatly underrated/ignored Hunter's Blood.

Most Memorable Demise: Someone getting an arrow right through the head. A guaranteed cinema slayer.

Look Out For: A cool, unusual effect - did I mention that Stan Winston handled these? - with someone's head being bissected with an axe.

Killer Quote: "I need to remind you of a little movie called Deliverance " Scott delivers the sole self-aware line in Wrong Turn.

DVD Extras: Making Of featurettes, deleted and extended scenes, audio commentary, poster gallery.

Release Date: Out now.
